If you are choosing a school for your child, you may come across the Swedish term “öppet hus”. Here is what it means, what to expect on the day and how to make the most of a school visit in Stockholm.

An *öppet hus* is an open house or school visit where families can visit the school, meet staff, see the environment and learn more about how the school works before making a school choice.

For many parents, this is one of the best ways to understand what a school actually feels like beyond statistics, rankings and websites.

What happens during an open house?

Every school organises its open house differently, but you may be able to:

  • Visit classrooms and other school facilities
  • Meet teachers, principals and other staff
  • Learn about the school’s teaching methods and values
  • Hear about after-school care, or fritids
  • Ask questions about class sizes, student support and daily routines
  • Learn about languages, special profiles and activities
  • Get a feeling for the atmosphere and school environment

Some schools also offer guided tours or presentations for parents.

On a tour you will often see more than the classroom: the corridors and lockers, science and craft rooms, the sports hall and the changing rooms. These everyday spaces say a lot about how the school day works.

What should you ask when visiting a school?

It can be helpful to prepare a few questions before you go.

An open notebook with a handwritten checklist, a pen, a school leaflet and a cup of coffee on a wooden table

You could ask:

  • How large are the classes?
  • How does the school support children who need extra help?
  • What does a normal school day look like?
  • How does fritids work?
  • How does the school communicate with parents?
  • How does the school work with wellbeing, safety and bullying prevention?
  • What languages, activities or special programmes does the school offer?
  • How does the transition into preschool class, förskoleklass, work?

It can also be worth asking how often pupils have PE, what the sports hall and changing rooms are like, and how the school makes changing for PE feel safe and comfortable for every child.

Do all schools have an open house?

No. Not every school organises an open house, and the dates can vary.

Some schools call the event:

  • Öppet hus
  • Informationsmöte
  • Skolvisning
  • School tour
  • Information evening

Municipal and independent schools may also publish their dates in different places, so there is not always one complete list covering every school.

If you are interested in a specific school, check the school’s own website as well as local school information pages.

Before you go

Check whether you need to register in advance, and make sure you confirm the date and time directly with the school.

If possible, visit more than one school. Comparing different schools in person can make it much easier to understand which environment feels right for your child and your family.

Before or after your visits, you can search all schools, compare schools side by side using official Skolverket data, and see the best schools in Stockholm by official indicators. Our guide to school choice in Stockholm explains how applying works.
