How to apply for a school in Stockholm

In the City of Stockholm, guardians make their school choice for preschool class and for some year-group transitions in the city's e-service. Independent schools run their own queues, which you join directly with each school – often well in advance.

Applications to upper secondary school in Stockholm County go through Gymnasieantagningen Storsthlm, where you can apply to programmes across the whole county.

Statistics do not tell the whole story. Visit the school, ask about its profile, size and travel time, and read reviews from other families on each profile page.

How does School Reviews rank schools and preschools?

  • Merit value, share of certified teachers and share of students graduating within three years come from Skolverket's open statistics. We only compare figures from the same, most recent school year.
  • Grade points for upper secondary schools are an unweighted average across the school's programmes, because Skolverket reports them per programme.
  • Parent ratings are based on reviews on School Reviews. A unit needs at least 3 reviews to be ranked, and its rating is adjusted towards the city average (equivalent to 5 extra reviews) so a single five-star review cannot beat many consistently positive ones. There are currently 1 ratings for 1 units in this list.
  • Each list shows one thing at a time – we never merge different measures into a made-up “overall score”. Ties are sorted alphabetically. Closed units and open preschools are not included.
  • Limitations: the statistics describe students' results and staff qualifications, not a school's overall quality. Small units may lack figures because the authorities do not publish them, and reviews reflect individual families' experiences.

Which is the best school in Stockholm?

It depends on what matters for your child. No authority names a “best school”. By year 9 merit value (2025/26), Fredrikshovs Slotts Skola is highest in our list, but merit value, certified teachers, school size, profile and travel time matter differently to different families.

Which compulsory schools in Stockholm have the highest merit value?

Which schools in Stockholm have the best reviews?

No school in Stockholm has at least 3 reviews yet, so we do not show a parent ranking. You can read the reviews that exist on each school's page – and help other families by writing your own.

How do I choose the right school for my child?

Start with what your child needs: safety, travel time, size, profile or support. Then compare statistics and reviews, visit the school and ask about teaching and student health services. Remember that independent schools often have queues you need to join early.

What is the difference between municipal and independent schools?

Both are free of charge, follow the Education Act and the national curriculum, and are inspected by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate. Municipal schools are run by the municipality, while independent schools have another organiser and their own queue rules, such as queue time or sibling priority.
