If you are new to Sweden, there is one slightly confusing thing about sportlov:

It does not happen at the same time everywhere.

One family may be planning a winter break in February while friends in another city still have school.

That is completely normal.

In 2027, sportlov falls in week 7, week 8 or week 9 depending on the municipality.

Here are the confirmed dates for some of Sweden’s largest cities.

So if you live in Gothenburg, your child may already be back at school before Stockholm’s sportlov has even started.

What is sportlov?

Sportlov is Sweden’s winter school holiday.

The name literally relates to sport — sports, reflecting the holiday’s historical connection with winter and outdoor activities.

Today, families use the week in many different ways:

skiing or winter trips
visiting museums
staying home
joining municipality holiday activities
spending time outdoors
travelling
doing absolutely nothing for a few days

The last option is also perfectly valid.

Why is sportlov on different weeks?

Sweden does not have one single national sportlov week.

School calendars are organised by the responsible school authority — *huvudman* — within national rules for the school year. Municipal school calendars therefore differ between different parts of Sweden.*1

That is why you will hear people say:

“We have sportlov week 8.”

rather than only giving the dates.

In 2027, the cities in this guide fall across three weeks:

Week 7 15–19 February

Week 8 22–26 February

Week 9 1–5 March

Stockholm Sportlov 2027

Stockholm municipal compulsory schools have sportlov during:

1–5 March 2027 — Week 9

Stockholm City confirms week 9 for its municipal compulsory schools.*2

One important detail:

Independent schools — fristående skolor — can have different term and holiday dates.

So if your child attends an independent school, always check the school's own calendar.

Gothenburg Sportlov 2027

Gothenburg's municipal schools have sportlov:

15–19 February 2027 — Week 7

Gothenburg City also states that fritidshem are open during these sportlov days for children who are entitled to attend.*3

Malmö Sportlov 2027

Malmö municipal compulsory schools:

22–26 February 2027 — Week 8

Malmö also notes that independent schools may use different dates.*4

Uppsala Sportlov 2027

Uppsala:

22–26 February 2027 — Week 8

The municipality lists the same dates for municipal compulsory schools and upper-secondary schools.*5

What happens to fritids during sportlov?

School being closed does not automatically mean fritids is closed.

For example, Stockholm states that children enrolled in fritids are offered activities during school holidays, while Gothenburg specifically lists its sportlov period as days when school is closed but fritids remains open.*2,*3

However, local arrangements can differ.

If your child attends fritids, check:

whether you need to register attendance in advance
opening hours
whether activities take place at the usual school
whether groups are combined during the holiday
whether any specific days are closed

This is especially worth checking before booking your own work schedule.

Does preschool also have sportlov?

Usually, regular preschool does not follow school holidays in the same way compulsory school does.

Preschool children do not normally receive a week-long sportlov simply because school-age children do.

However, staffing and attendance arrangements can vary locally, particularly when many families take holiday at the same time.

If you have one child in preschool and another in school, this is one of those moments when Sweden’s family calendar becomes slightly more interesting.
