School Choice 2027 in Sweden: What Parents Need to Know
Preparing for school choice in Sweden in 2027? Learn how skolval works, who needs to apply, why application dates vary and what parents should prepare.
If your child is starting school in Sweden in autumn 2027, you may soon start seeing one word everywhere:
Skolval.
It means school choice.
But before you start looking for one national application date, there is something important to know: Sweden does not have one single Skolval 2027 deadline.
The process is organised locally. That means who needs to apply, when applications open and how places are allocated can vary between municipalities.
Who may need to take part?
This depends on where you live.
In Gothenburg, children who will start förskoleklass in the autumn, as well as pupils who need to change school because their current school does not offer the next year group, submit school preferences.*1
Malmö's ordinary Söka skola process applies to children starting förskoleklass and pupils in Year 6 whose school does not offer Year 7. Malmö says this application period takes place in January each year, although its public page currently still shows the completed 2026 round rather than confirmed 2027 dates.*2,*3
So do not copy a date from another municipality.
Does choosing a school guarantee a place?
No. Parents can submit their preferred schools, but the first choice is not guaranteed.
Göteborg states that there are no queues to municipal schools in the city. Parent preferences are the starting point, but when there are more applicants than places, placement rules decide who receives a place.*1
Malmö similarly explains that the chance of receiving a requested municipal school depends on factors including demand and relative proximity between home and school.*3
When should I start preparing?
Before the application period opens. You can already compare:
- distance from home
- year groups offered
- teacher qualifications
- Skolenkäten results
- safety and study-environment indicators
- school profile or pedagogy
- language support
- fritids
- parent reviews
- open-house dates
The application form is only the last step. The actual decision-making can start much earlier — and you can compare schools on SchoolReviews using official Skolverket statistics.
What about independent schools?
Do not assume the municipal application automatically covers every independent school.
Malmö, for example, includes only some independent schools in its municipal application service, while others have their own admission arrangements.*2,*3
Check each independent school's own admissions information.
School Choice 2027 checklist
Before applications open:
- Check your municipality's official skolval page
- Confirm whether your child needs to participate
- Add the application dates to your calendar when published
- Compare several schools
- Check commuting and fritids
- Review official school statistics and Skolenkäten
- Attend open houses where possible
- Check independent-school applications separately
- Make sure all guardians complete any required approval
Malmö, for example, requires all guardians to approve the application for it to be valid.*3
