If you are raising a child in Sweden, you will sooner or later come across the word barnbidrag.

If you are new to the Swedish system, the simplest explanation is this: barnbidrag is money the state pays every month for every child — automatically, and without looking at your income.

What is barnbidrag?

Barnbidrag is Sweden's child allowance. It is a monthly payment administered by Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.

It is not income-tested, which means the amount does not depend on how much you earn. Försäkringskassan states that barnbidrag is not dependent on income but rather on which country's social-insurance system you are covered by.

In 2026, the standard amount is:

SEK 1,250 per child per month

Barnbidrag is tax-free.

Who can receive barnbidrag?

According to Försäkringskassan, you may be entitled to barnbidrag if:

  • you are the legal guardian of a child under 16, or of an older child who is still in compulsory school or adapted compulsory school
  • the child lives in Sweden, another EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the United Kingdom
  • both you and the child are insured in Sweden

For families with connections to more than one country, EU and international social-security rules can affect which country pays the benefit.

Do I need to apply?

Usually, no.

Försäkringskassan states that you normally do not need to apply for child allowance. It is paid automatically when you are the child's legal guardian and you and the child are insured in Sweden.

The first payment is normally made in the month after the child is born.

In some situations, such as adoption or international circumstances, Försäkringskassan may need additional information before making a decision.

How much is barnbidrag in 2026?

If one parent receives the whole child allowance, the official amounts are:

Number of childrenBarnbidragFlerbarnstilläggTotal per month
1SEK 1,250SEK 0SEK 1,250
2SEK 2,500SEK 150SEK 2,650
3SEK 3,750SEK 730SEK 4,480
4SEK 5,000SEK 1,740SEK 6,740
5SEK 6,250SEK 2,990SEK 9,240
6SEK 7,500SEK 4,240SEK 11,740

From the fifth child onwards, the large-family supplement increases by SEK 1,250 per additional child per month.

What is flerbarnstillägg?

Flerbarnstillägg is an additional payment for families with two or more eligible children.

Försäkringskassan states that you may receive it if:

  • you are the guardian of at least two children and receive child allowance or study allowance for them
  • you and the children are insured in Sweden

It is also tax-free. For most families, flerbarnstillägg is paid automatically, although Försäkringskassan notes that there are situations where an application or notification may be required.

Who receives the money?

For children born on or after 1 March 2014, barnbidrag is normally divided equally between parents who have joint custody.

For one child, that usually means:

SEK 625 per parent per month

If one parent has sole custody, that parent receives the full child allowance.

For children born before 1 March 2014, the default arrangement is different: unless the parents have notified Försäkringskassan of another distribution, the full payment goes to the person who gave birth to the child.

Is barnbidrag taxable?

No. Försäkringskassan states that there is no tax on barnbidrag or flerbarnstillägg.

Is barnbidrag based on your salary?

No. Barnbidrag is not income-tested. Your salary does not determine the ordinary child-allowance amount.

This is different from benefits such as bostadsbidrag, where income is relevant.

How long do you receive barnbidrag?

Barnbidrag is paid until the child reaches 16, with the precise final payment depending on when during the year the child turns 16.

After that:

  • if the child attends upper-secondary school, studiebidrag from CSN normally replaces barnbidrag
  • if the child is still attending compulsory school or adapted compulsory school, förlängt barnbidrag — extended child allowance — may apply

The study allowance is currently SEK 1,250 per month, the same amount as ordinary barnbidrag, but it is not paid in July or August.

What if you move to Sweden?

This section is especially important because the rules change in 2027.

If you are already living in Sweden before 1 January 2027

Försäkringskassan states that people who are resident in Sweden before 1 January 2027 are not covered by the new qualification rules introduced from that date.

If you move to Sweden from 1 January 2027

New qualification requirements begin on 1 January 2027 for certain social-insurance benefits, including barnbidrag.

A person moving to Sweden may need to qualify either through a period of residence in Sweden or through sufficient earned income. Försäkringskassan's official information currently states that qualification can include:

  • having lived in Sweden for 5 years within a 15-year period, or
  • meeting specified income requirements

Because international situations can be complicated, families moving to Sweden from 2027 should check their own circumstances directly with Försäkringskassan.

What if one parent works or lives abroad?

International cases can work differently.

If a parent works, lives or is insured in another EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the UK, rules coordinating family benefits may determine:

  • which country pays first
  • whether Sweden pays anything
  • and whether a supplementary amount is payable

So in an international family situation, do not assume that the ordinary domestic rules apply exactly the same way.
